Terms of Service

Last updated: March 3, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Snap That Piece mobile application ("App") and the snapthatpiece.com website ("Website"), operated by Superposition Labs Inc. ("Company", "we", "us", "our"), a corporation registered at 1600 – 925 West Georgia Street, Vancouver BC V6C 3L2, Canada. By using the App or Website, you agree to these Terms.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App. We may update these Terms from time to time, and continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

2. Description of Service

Snap That Piece uses on-device machine learning to detect chess piece positions from photos of real chessboards and generate FEN (Forsyth–Edwards Notation) strings. The App is provided as a utility tool for chess players and enthusiasts.

3. Account Registration

Account creation is entirely optional. The App's core functionality — detecting chess positions and generating FEN notation — works fully without an account or any personal data. You may choose to use Sign in with Apple, Google Sign-In, or email registration to create an account. When you register, your name, email address, and authentication credentials are transmitted to our servers for account creation and identity verification. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account. You may delete your account at any time from the Settings screen within the App.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the App for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable laws
  • Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App or its machine learning models
  • Submit false, misleading, or malicious content through error reports
  • Interfere with or disrupt the App's functionality or servers
  • Use the App to infringe on the intellectual property rights of others

5. Intellectual Property

The App, including its machine learning models, design, code, and content, is owned by Snap That Piece and protected by intellectual property laws. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the App for personal, non-commercial purposes.

Chess piece artwork used in the App is by Colin M.L. Burnett (cburnett), licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

6. Third-Party Services

The App includes an "Analyze on Lichess" feature that opens a link to lichess.org containing the FEN position string. Snap That Piece is not affiliated with or endorsed by Lichess. Your use of Lichess is governed by their own terms of service.

7. User-Submitted Content and Image Rights

If you choose to submit an error report, enable training data sharing, or otherwise share any image through the App, it may include a cropped image of the detected board area and a text description you provide.

By submitting any image or content to us, you grant Superposition Labs Inc. a worldwide, royalty-free, sub-licensable license to use, reproduce, modify, and create derivative works from the submitted content for the purposes of training, improving, validating, and benchmarking machine learning models for chess position detection, and for internal research and development related to computer vision. This license survives account deletion only to the extent that the content has already been incorporated into trained models, from which individual submissions cannot be practically extracted. You represent and warrant that you have the right to grant this license and that the submitted content does not infringe any third party's rights.

You may withdraw your consent to future use of your submitted content by contacting privacy@snapthatpiece.com. Upon withdrawal, we will cease using your content for new purposes, though content already incorporated into trained models cannot be individually extracted or removed.

Error reports do not include personally identifiable information unless you voluntarily include it in the description.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

The App is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. We do not guarantee that chess position detection will be accurate, complete, or error-free. You acknowledge that on-device machine learning models may produce incorrect results, and you should verify any detected positions before relying on them.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Snap That Piece shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the App. Our total liability for any claim related to the App shall not exceed the amount you paid for the App (which is zero, as the App is free).

10. Privacy

Your use of the App is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we handle your data. By using the App, you consent to our data practices as described in the Privacy Policy.

11. Termination

You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it from your device. If you have an account, you may delete it from Settings before uninstalling. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate access to any server-side features if these Terms are violated.

12. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

13. Contact

If you have questions about these Terms, contact us at support@snapthatpiece.com.
